The Mapaville Fire Protection District sadly announces the death of retired
Assistant Chief Gary L. Peterein.


Gary L. Peterein age 63, passed away Wednesday April 1, 2020 at Mercy South
hospital in St. Louis County. He was born in St. Louis, MO on Otober 16,
1956 to the late John J. and Julia (Plass) Peterein.

Gary served as the Assistant Chief and Association Chairman for the
Mapaville Fire Association as well as the Board Chairman for the Mapaville
Fire Protection District. Gary started his fire service career at the age of
11 by volunteering his time where it was needed. Gary served the Association
as a Firefighter, Assistant Chief, Vice-Chairman and Chairman. Upon the
creation of the Mapaville Fire Protection District in August of 2000, Gary
became the District's first Chairman of the Board and held the position
until April of 2017. 


In addition to his community service, Gary owned and operated G.L. Peterein
Excavating in Festus, MO. He also worked for PPG Industries in Crystal City,
MO. Gary was also a member of Our Lady Catholic Church in Festus, MO.


Gary is survived by sisters Carol M. (the late Rudy) Zaagman of Benton
Harbor, MI and Lori J. (the late Dennis) Robinson of Festus; brothers Wayne
F. (Kathleen) Peterein, Sr. of St. Louis, John D. Peterein, James H. (Mary)
Peterein both of Festus and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces & nephews
as well as many cousins.


A memorial service will be held at a later date. Private interment will be
at the Sacred Heart Cemetary in Crystal City, MO. In lieu of flowers,
memorials are requested to be made to the Mapaville Fire Association, PO Box
195, Mapaville, MO 63065.
